Brooks Houck has been ordered to stop selling properties and other items after he was recorded on a jail phone call saying Crystal Rogers' family "is going to take everything that I've got". Houck is currently facing a wrongful death lawsuit from Sherry Ballard, on behalf of Crystal's children.
According to court records, on the same day he was convicted of murder, Houck started calling his family from the jail. The transcribed conversations included in court documents record him asking them to start selling properties and other items saying, "it all needs to go. All of it needs to go."
Crystal Rogers' family caught word of these conversations, and contacted their attorney to look into it.
Recorded conversations from the jail to his family revealed Houck called Crystal Maupin, his sister Rhonda McIlvoy, his brother Nick Houck and his mom Rosemary Houck to discuss selling assets.
Houck specifically mentioned the lawsuit to his sister saying, "You know, because we're on that civil case is what's coming next. Do you understand? …You know, so they're going to take everything. They're going to take everything that I've got. So go ahead and try to get what you can for it."
Sherry Ballard filed the lawsuit in 2023 on behalf of her grandchildren claiming Houck, “intentionally and wrongfully caused the death of Crystal M. Rogers.” Now that he's been convicted of the crime, the lawsuit will move forward.
But before it does, it appears Houck was attempting to liquidate his assets. In a conversation with his mom Rosemary Houck, he encourages her to call a man he's done business with before. That man, Luke Raiser, wrote a written statement for court stating Rosemary called him multiple times but he did not answer after the first call.
There is a hearing set for this issue in October, but until then, Houck cannot liquidate anything without first talking to the judge.
