Bullitt County school bus crash sends 12 students to local hospitals

The Bullitt County Sheriff's Office is investigating the Monday afternoon crash, which sent the driver and several students to area hospitals.

A Bullitt County Public Schools bus carrying 28 Lebanon Junction Elementary School students was involved in a crash Monday afternoon, sending several children and the driver to area hospitals for treatment.

According to a release from BCPS Superintendent Jesse Bacon, the crash happened around 4:45 p.m. on Wilson Creek Road. Emergency crews were notified immediately and responded to the scene, along with BCPS transportation, school safety personnel, and Lebanon Junction school staff, who were on hand to support students, families and first responders.

A parent I spoke to told me she found about the crash when she received a frantic call from a neighbor, who told her over screaming children that there had been a bus crash and her children were on the bus.

Then she received a series of texts from the district.

The district credited a coordinated response from the Bullitt County Emergency Management Agency, Bullitt County Emergency Medical Service, the Lebanon Junction Fire Department, and the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.

According to the district, EMS transported the bus driver and eight students to area hospitals for evaluation, while parents took another five students to local medical facilities on their own. First responders cleared the remaining students at the scene and released them directly to their families.

Norton Children's Hospital confirmed the facility treated seven patients from the crash. The hospital did not release information on the extent of their injuries.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the Bullitt County Sheriff's Department.

"The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority," Bacon wrote in the release. "We sincerely appreciate the Lebanon Junction community's support, patience, and care for our students during this time."

BCPS said it continues to work closely with emergency personnel and families as the investigation moves forward.
