If you're planning to head out this weekend, you'll want to grab your warmest coat- and maybe reconsider those plans altogether.

The National Weather Service has issued two warnings affecting parts of Kentucky and southern Indiana that will make this a weekend to stay indoors if you can.

Snow Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning

First up: snow. A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon and lasts through 7 a.m. Sunday morning for portions of south central Indiana and east central, and north central Kentucky.

According to the National Weather Service, we're looking at 1 to 3 inches of accumulation in Louisville, which means slippery road conditions are expected. If you have to drive, plan for extra time and take it slow.

Dangerous wind chills overnight

But the bigger concern might be what happens after midnight. A Cold Weather Advisory kicks in at 1 a.m. EST (midnight CST) Sunday and runs through 1 p.m. EST (noon CST) Sunday afternoon.

The National Weather Service warns that wind chills could plummet as low as 11 below zero across portions of south central Indiana and east central, north central, northwest, and south central Kentucky. Some areas could see wind chills as low as 10 below.

That's not just uncomfortable- it's dangerous. The National Weather Service cautions that these conditions could result in hypothermia if precautions aren't taken, and that frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.

What you should do

The National Weather Service recommends using caution while traveling outside and wearing appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

They're also asking people to make frequent checks on older family members, friends, and neighbors during this cold snap.

If you're using portable heaters, make sure you're using them correctly. And this is important: do not use generators or grills inside- ever.

Stay safe and stay warm out there, Kentucky and Indiana.
