The next step in what seems to be an ever-evolving construction project at Interstate 264 (Watterson Expressway) and U.S. 42 (Brownsboro Road) will get started on Tuesday.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet plans to initiate daily blasting operations as part of the $130 million improvement project.

The project represents one of the largest infrastructure investments in Louisville's transportation network, designed to address long-term traffic capacity issues on this heavily traveled corridor.

With construction nearing completion at the new VA Hospital, traffic is expected to get more congested in the coming years.

How will this impact drivers?

Intermittent rolling roadblocks will be in effect near the I-264/I-71 interchange to allow for safe blasting operations. These roadblocks occur once daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., with each closure lasting up to 20 minutes.

The blasting operations are necessary to prepare the interstate for widening as part of the highway improvement project.

Project timeline

The highway improvement project is scheduled for completion by Fall 2027. The blasting phase represents a critical component of the rock removal and preparation work required before widening can proceed.

KYTC wants to make sure drivers are aware ahead of possible disruptions and has taken the following steps to keep people informed:

  • Daily advance notifications through email and text alert systems
  • Standardized scheduling of roadblocks during mid-day hours to minimize rush-hour impact

If this is on your daily route, signing up for alerts might be in your best interest! You can do that here.
