A Franklin County grand jury has decided not to indict Jacob Bard in the December shooting on Kentucky State University's campus that left one student dead and another critically injured. The grand jury ruled Bard acted in self-defense, effectively ending the criminal case against him.
Bard had been arrested on murder and assault charges following the incident but his defense team argued he had "no option but to use necessary deadly force" to protect his family during what they described as a violent attack.
According to his attorney, Bard's son was being assaulted, and he had to intervene, doing what they say any parent would do to protect their child.
The grand jury returned a no true bill on all charges, meaning they found insufficient evidence to proceed with prosecution under Kentucky's self-defense laws.
Bard's family had posted bond before the grand jury announced its decision.
