What started as a routine police operation in Portland turned into an animal rescue mission Tuesday when officers discovered nearly two dozen dogs living in horrible conditions.

LMPD detectives were serving a search warrant at a home near 25th and Rowan Street when they discovered 19 dogs that had clearly been neglected for an extended period. Police say the animals were covered in fleas, some had visible tumors, and many looked malnourished.

Interestingly, the warrant that brought police to the home had nothing to do with animals. But police knew there were dogs at the house, so they brought along Louisville Metro Animal Services and LMPD's Animal Cruelty Enforcement Unit just in case the dogs needed help. Turns out, they definitely did.

"The dogs were living in extremely poor conditions," police said in a statement.

Three people were arrested at the scene: 48-year-old Tymane Harris, 59-year-old Lamont Harris, and 31-year-old Diajion Barnett. One of them is now facing 19 animal cruelty charges- one for each dog.

According to court records, Tymane Harris is charged with 19 counts of animal cruelty, drug trafficking, and gun charges. Lamont Harris is charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and Diajion Barnett is charged with tampering with physical evidence.

The good news? All 19 dogs are now safe and being cared for by Louisville Metro Animal Services. If you're interested in adopting one of these pups once they're ready, you can reach out to LMAS for more information.
