Louisville has been hunting for its next boxing champion since Muhammad Ali put the Kentucky city on the pugilistic map. That search may finally be over.
A local boxer named Lavant Brownlee just won big, on a international stage, beating competitors from Italy, Lithuania, England and the Republic of Georgia to win the title '2025 Brandenburg Cup Welterweight Champion'.
The 18-year-old boxer is a member of USA Boxing's Youth High Performance Team, and won gold at the 2024 USA Boxing National Championships.
The wins just keep coming for the young boxer, but he says he has his eye on the 2028 summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
“I pretty much knew I would be here, as long as I kept working and doing what I needed to do,” Brownlee told WHAS11. “Keep following the people around me and just keep working hard.”
Before the Olympic qualifiers, Brownlee will compete at the 2025 USA Boxing National Championships in Lubbock, Texas, later this year.
