Chris Gaither is no longer the basketball coach at Martha Layne Collins High School, according to district officials.
The change comes as Gaither remains on paid suspension while Shelby County Schools investigates allegations of sexual misconduct and inappropriate communication with current or former students.
District spokesperson Josh Rhodes confirmed Monday that while the investigation continues, Gaither has been removed from his coaching position. He did not provide additional details about whether this is a temporary or permanent change, or who will replace Gaither as head coach.
The district reopened its investigation into Gaither on December 5th, the day after Hayley Weddle, a 2014 graduate, submitted a written statement detailing what she says was an inappropriate relationship that began when she was 16 and a team manager on his basketball team.
