With Andy Barr leaving the seat and polls closing early, the Alvarado-Dembo race could be one of the first signals of a national wave.

**LEXINGTON, Ky. -** If you only keep one eye on one Kentucky race tonight, make it the 6th Congressional District. The seat belongs to Republican Andy Barr, who is leaving it to run for U.S. Senate. Political analysts now call the race to replace him one of the most competitive in the country this midterm.

Republican Dr. Ralph Alvarado is a former state senator and a former Tennessee Department of Health commissioner. He is facing Democrat Zach Dembo- a former federal prosecutor who left the Justice Department in 2025 over disagreements with President Donald Trump’s policy priorities.

The winner will represent Lexington and its suburbs in the US House of Representatives.

## Why it’s a big deal

On paper, this is not a seat Democrats should be able to win. The 6th has voted Republican since 2012, when Barr knocked off a Democratic incumbent. It was redistricted in 2022 to take in more GOP-leaning rural counties. Trump carried the district by 15 points in 2024.

For much of this year, Alvarado held the lead in the polls. That has changed in the final stretch. New polling and campaign spending have pushed analysts to move the race into “toss-up” territory. The Cook Political Report describes a perfect storm brewing for Democrats, with polling showing a tied race at best for Republicans.

Experts say the biggest reason this race is so close is that nobody is defending the seat. If Barr were on the ballot again, this would likely be an easier win for Republicans. Without an incumbent, voters are choosing between two newcomers, and Democrats see an opening.

## Why it has national eyes on it

Polls in the 6th close earlier than in most of the country. “If Democrats are having a good night, this is going to be one of the first indications that a blue wave is coming," Cook Political Report’s Erin Covey [recently told Fox 56 News](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVu8dZdSjw0&ref=shayinformed.com).

So when the results start coming in, the 6th could be one of the first real clues about how the night is going nationally. The district is entirely in the Eastern time zone, so its polls close at 6 p.m. ET.

A Dembo win would be a significant upset in a district Republicans have held for more than a decade. An Alvarado win would show the GOP is holding steady in territory it expects to keep.

Democrats don't need to flip this district to win a majority, and victory in such a conservative district would be seen as a significant upset even in a strong year for them.

## The big picture

This election is considered an opportunity for Democrats to erase Republicans' narrow majority in the House of Representatives. Currently, Republicans hold 218 seats and Democrats hold 214, but all 435 are up for grabs tonight.
