If the answer is "never," you're not alone, and you might be leaving cash on the table. Next week, Jefferson County residents get two chances to find out in person.
Jefferson County Clerk David Yates is teaming up with Kentucky State Treasurer Mark Metcalf to bring the Treasurer's Unclaimed Property Roadshow to Louisville on October 7 and 8. Treasury staff will be on hand to help you search for property, figure out whether it's tied to your name, and walk you through filing a claim.

How much are we talking about?
A lot. Yates says more than $134 million in unclaimed property is connected to Louisville residents. "There is a good chance many people don't realize money may be waiting for them," Yates said.
Statewide, the Kentucky State Treasury is holding nearly $800 million in unclaimed assets belonging to Kentucky residents and local government agencies.
What counts as unclaimed property?
Think forgotten bank accounts, uncashed payroll or vendor checks, old life insurance policies, stocks, and utility deposits. After a required period of inactivity, businesses and financial institutions turn that money over to the state Treasury for safekeeping. It doesn't disappear, but it doesn't find you on its own either.
The Treasury says you can also search for property that belonged to a deceased family member. Heirs or other legally authorized representatives may be eligible to claim it.
You don't have to attend. You can search anytime through the Kentucky State Treasurer's Office at treasury.ky.gov or on MissingMoney.com.
The takeaway from the Clerk's Office: don't assume there's nothing there. It takes a few minutes, and the money could be yours.
