If you haven't started thinking about how the I-65 closure this summer is going to affect your daily commute, now is the time. We're exactly 50 days out, and this is going to be a big deal for anyone driving through, in, or around Louisville.

50 days from now, a five-mile stretch of Louisville's busiest interstate will be closed to traffic- meaning not only will I-65 be inaccessible, Louisville's other highways will become even more crowded.

The closure is from the Watterson Expressway (I-264) all the way into downtown Louisville at Jefferson Street and it's scheduled to close at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, June 1. The state expects it to reopen on Saturday, August 1. That's two full months with one of Louisville's most heavily traveled interstates completely shut down.

Why is this happening?

Three bridges on that corridor- over Kentucky Street/Brook Street, Hill Street/CSX Railroad/Burnett Avenue, and Bradley Avenue near the fairgrounds-need to be replaced. All three were built in the late 1950s as part of the original interstate construction. They're old, and they need to go.

The state says doing a full closure, rather than trying to squeeze construction around live traffic, will actually save at least a year of delays and restrictions overall. Crews have already been working since last September building the foundations for the three new bridges- that work is about 80% done- so when the closure hits, they'll be ready to move fast.

There is a small bit of good news tucked in here: a two-mile section of southbound I-65, from University Boulevard to the Watterson, is expected to reopen to two lanes by July 1- a full month before the full reopening. That will also bring back four ramps: Crittenden Drive on and off ramps and the on ramps from Eastern Parkway and University Boulevard.

So where do you go instead?

The official detour routes through traffic to I-264- the Georgia Davis Powers Expressway- on the west side of Louisville. State officials say it's the shortest alternate route with the most available capacity, and some ramps along I-264 are actually being temporarily widened ahead of the closure to help handle the extra load.

For people heading into or out of downtown Louisville specifically, southbound I-65 traffic can exit at Jefferson Street to get downtown, and I-64 is also an option. If you're leaving downtown, headed north on I-65, you'll use the ramp from East Liberty Street, or you can use the I-64 ramps at Third Street and Ninth Street.

KYTC has also partnered with Waze, so the app should be updated with real-time closure information to help route you around backups as they develop. If you use it regularly, make sure your app is up to date before June 1.

The bigger picture

This closure is part of a much larger project- nine total bridges on the I-65 corridor are being replaced or rehabilitated. The first three are in the worst shape, which is why they're being tackled first. The remaining six bridges span Liberty Street, Floyd Street, Chestnut Street, Jacob Street/Broadway/Gray Street, Muhammad Ali Boulevard/Brook Street, and the Muhammad Ali Boulevard on-ramp. The full project is expected to wrap up in late 2027.

Bottom line: plan, add extra time to your commute, and start building your alternate routes now- before June 1 sneaks up on you.
