A Boyd County man will spend decades behind bars for killing two young mothers in a 2022 shooting that left their children without parents.

This week- the Kentucky Attorney General announced a plea deal in a double-murder case involving two young mothers from Boyd County, KY.

John Tooson was sentenced to two life terms after pleading guilty on murder charges connected to 20-year-old Selina Easter and 18-year-old Summer Algarakhuly. He also pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, wanton endangerment, and being a persistent felony offender.

According to officials, Tooson had been in a relationship with Easter and turned violent inside her apartment in June 2022, shooting both women while Algarakhuly's newborn daughter was in another room. He ran from the scene and was eventually caught by authorities in Ohio.

Both victims left behind young children, and the court hearing centered heavily on that loss, according to the Attorney General. In a victim impact statement, one family member described stepping into a mother's role for one of the girls left behind: "I was only ever supposed to be her aunt." She went on to describe the everyday moments the child will never get back with Summer- never running into her arms after a hard day, never having her hair braided, never picking out nail polish together, never getting comfort after a first heartbreak.

Boyd County Commonwealth’s Attorney Rhonda Copley said the plea brings a measure of accountability, even though nothing can undo what the family lost. "Nothing can bring Selina and Summer back to their young children and family, but our office hopes that this plea and sentencing can bring peace to the family," she said, also thanking the Ashland Police Department for its investigative work.

AG Russell Coleman echoed that sentiment in his own statement: "A mother can never be replaced. The sentences delivered do not heal the emptiness left behind, but, we hope, provide justice for all those who loved these two young women."

Tooson will be eligible for parole after 25 years.
